I've tried a Casio ex500 (I think) now(thanks, Josh), it's different, but I think I could adapt. Price is a little steep tho.
I've decided to buy a new handheld. The good ol' Palm III with 2MB just don't cut it no more. I think it's being sent to the coffee table to be a really cool universal remote control. Any way, Do I go Palm? Do I go Palm clone? Do I go colour? Do I go CE [Wince]? Ahem... Pun intended. Until I decide I'll be documenting my findings here.

And I begin:
CE devices seem to have more bang for the buck. Brighter screens, more memory, more colours, word/excel right on the handheld. But the do run CE which, afaik, isn't as stable as Palm OS. Handspring Palm clones don't have flash ROM, so I'm stuck with the operating system it's shipped with, but they have the most expansion options right now. The Palm m505 isn't out yet, but with a 256 colour screen and support for SD (Secure Digital) cards for expansion up to 64MB and GPS's (Don't care) and digital cameras (Will they be better than the cheesy Kodak one?) it's probably worth the wait. m500 and m505 also have 4MB flash ROM, vs. 2MB on older Palm models.

Why do I feel a pain in my wallet already?

What the hell is it about spring that makes all the assholes on the road drive like they got their licenses out of a Cracker Jack box?

A big thank you to Rob and Sean for helping me figure out the archive problem. Now that I've worked out the functionality (with their help) I'll be redesigning and publishing designs that don't (in my opinion) suck.

Rob has somehow managed to create a moral out of the (basic) theory behind twisted pair wiring. While Rob's right on the theory, I don't see where the moral comes into it.
Alright, I need to find a job where I'm given some training BEFORE all hell breaks loose. I'm sick of being thrown into situations where I've never seen the problem before and the user(s) expect me to wave my hand over the computer and say "all is well." Instead, I get "What do you mean you don't know how (Software package of choice) works? You work for the computer department, don't you?" Yeah, I do. I am not, however, specifically trained in the hundereds of different applications being taught here. Argh.
Ok, I think I got rid of the javascript error now. This archive thing is starting to get frustrating.
Humble and Fred are signing off of Edge 102. This irritates me. I've been listening to them since I was in high school. The worst part of the whole thing? They're going to an AM talk station. Corporate radio sucks.

Rob's managed to talk me through a couple of problems with the blogger tags and pointed out some problems I had with the html. It's getting closer to how I wanted it to be. Of course, as I'm using this as a working tool for learning html, no one should get too used to any layout that may appear here.

Well, I've totally screwed it up now. It's different, that's for sure, but it's totally screwed up. I'm walking away from it while I'm amused. I'll beat my head against the wall later.
Happy Easter to all.

I'm working on the new layout. Hopefully I won't get too frustrated.

I just did some fix-it stuff around the house. My cordless drill died just as I was starting, so I had to tighten a bunch of screws by hand AND I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT! Man, I'm getting old. The good news is that our gate now closes, latches, and can be opened from either side, and our bbq is now ready to cook it's first meal.

Once I finished with the gate, I ran inside to try my new layout. Suprise, it worked first try! There's still a few tweaks I'd like to do, but Blogger's happy with the tags.

List of what I have to do:
Blog numbers after date/time stamp,
Add (figure out) the archive code,
Add the background and the Mystery Item for the upper right corner,
Add my links,
Tweak the column sizes to be closer to what I envisioned.

All things considered, I'm rather happy with how it turned out.
Well, I did it again. Just as I was starting to really make progress with Access, I've gone and shelved it, in favour of learning all I can retain about HTML so that I can make this page pretty. And, to make me feel even worse about myself, I've broken my first rule of web design: If it's not going to be readable on a Palm Pilot, don't do it. So much for holding myself to my own standards.
I've come up with another design that I'm happier with, but I haven't had a change to try it yet. This is more a test post than anything, I couldn't post from work on Thurs, but Blogger was acting up, so I'm hoping that this will work.

Here's the error I'm getting:

Error 504:com.pyra.util.tparse.TemplateParseException: Nested template tags are not allowed

I don't see what I'm doing wrong, all my tags are similar to the simple template. And to top it all off, Discuss from the main page a Blogger seems to be broke.
I'm getting frustrated, maybe I should go back to bed. I can't get my new look to publish, blogger doesen't like something. I'll come back later and and see if I can find the offending code.

I've been looking through Rob's blog archive tangentalizingly delicious so that I could accurately quote something he said not too long ago. Instead of finding the quote I was looking for, I've come to a realization: I supply him with far too much material. And it will probably continue.

Who said "change is good?"

Over the next week I'll be working on a new layout for this page. If I actually come up with something that a) doesen't suck and b) I like, you'll likely see a major change. I think I'll be spending a lot of time with WebMonkey.
I had problems posting from work today. I'm going to assume that the problems were related to Blogger, as there was something up earlier tonight. I'll try posting from work again on Saturday. If I can't post from work I may look into other alternatives, either employment related or blogger related. ;-)

Here is the new look for my blog. I'm much happier with it now. It'll all be changed when I get the time.

Of course I didn't have time to look at mklinux at work. Oh well, gives me something to look forward to next week.

Thursday, April 05, 2001

For some reason, earlier this evening I reminded myself of mklinux (the port for 68k Macintosh computers) and decided to look into it. Not only will it run on some hardware kicking around at work, but it'll run on some very old stuff I've got at home. I can't wait to try it out tomorrow. Of course, this guarantees that I won't have time.
Reference for me (I'm lazy):
mklinux.org
netbsd.org
I always join the party late. Been meaning to create a blog for a few months now. Well, here I am. Welcome, self, to the world of blogging.
